Here's what has caught our attention lately.

YO-YO MA IS A BASSIST AT HEART

YO-YO MA

Cello virtuoso and world citizen of culture Yo-Yo Ma has a soft spot for bass. He's felt that way since the moment he first laid eyes on a double bass at the Paris Conservatory, and instantly wanted to play it. Of course, the instrument was a little big for a four-year-old, so his parents got him a cello as a compromise. You know the rest.

In an entertaining and readable interview in Mother Jones, Ma paraphrases Wynton Marsalis in calling the bassist in a jazz group the blue-collar worker, the guy building the street. "You may not hear it all the time," he says, "but if you take it away, everything falls apart."

Ma admits he still loves the bass, and often plays the bass lines in Silk Road Ensemble, his trans-national, multi-cultural collective of performers and composers.

Bass Transcription of
I Gotcha
by Joe Tex

Bass Play-Along video
This transcription is compliments of Eric Beaule, at www.PlayBassLines.com, author of several titles we carry. It is the catchy and fun line recorded in 1972, and famously included on the soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino's film "Reservoir Dogs."

JAIME DAVID VAZQUEZ-www.jaimedavidvazquez.com
BASS TIPS:
Tremolo
Player and educator Jaime David Vazquez (www.jaimedavidvazquez.com) illustrates the rapid repetition of one or two notes that creates this very musical technique.

JOHN FALSTROM - www.EADG4.com
EADG 4: Part 9
The Major Pentatonic Scale
In this video, John Falstrom, author of EADG 4, reveals the magic of the classic (for bassists!) major pentatonic scale.
