Welcome to the School of the Blues Lesson Series! This book and recording were created to help give you context to all the music you worked so hard to learn. The recorded Play-Along Trax have no bass. This gives you the opportunity to work on your blues bass patterns. I have used several different keys and tempos throughout these Play-Along Trax. These Play-Along Trax give you a very realistic example of how you would play live with a band.
Music examples are kept fairly simple to make sure this book is accessible to bass players just above the beginning level. For best understanding of these techniques refer to Mel Bay’s Blues Bass, Level 1 (MB21063BCD).
Lastly, all the references in this book are written for a right-handed four string electric bass. If you play a 5 string bass you just need to extend the examples to include your B string. If you play left-handed then you need to reverse any references to the left and right hands. Written in standard notation and TAB. 24 pages.

BLUES BASS BASICS

Welcome to the Blues Bass Basics. The following pages will guide you through the necessary requisites to playing and mastering blues bass guitar. A life-long study of classic blues lines by artists such as Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, Albert King, B.B. King, etc., would be the ultimate approach, but this book will supply you with enough material to sound and play like the greats. A basic knowledge of how to play the bass guitar is a pre-requisite, as well as some knowledge of music theory and elementary music reading capabilities. However beneficial, it is not necessary to be able to read music as all the examples are also written with tablature. Topics like shuffles, slow blues, minor blues and two-beat feels are covered, as well as an examination of right and left hand techniques. On the CD, most of the examples are played slowly for initial presentation and then followed by actual playing settings with a trio consisting of bass guitar, electric guitar, and drums for you to play along. Enjoy! Written in standard notation and TAB. Includes audio CD. 48 pages.

SOLID! BLUES BASS - EBOOK/PDF VERSION

Like many forms of American music, the traditional electric blues of the 50's and 60's has become an endangered species, increasingly replaced in clubs and recording sessions by a more high energy rock sound. As the older bluesmen disappear, the younger players coming up the ranks do not have as many opportunities to be mentored. If they are lucky enough to hear the older recordings, they may find that the "old school" style is worth pursuing. This text can be helpful for such players and students. This book is presented in sections. They can be studied together or separately. The first part presents basic techniques and positions that have been developed through years of live playing. They can be applied to many situations. Keep in mind that the blues is a very personal expression, and that these things are not set in stone. If something doesn't work for you, for example, a certain shape or fingering, by all means take what you like and leave the rest. The rest of this book presents various blues styles and concrete examples. They can be practiced by themselves, or in conjunction with the technical studies. This kind of study can go a long way to prepare you for what is out there. The real secret, though, hours spent playing the music with other people, at jam sessions, rehearsals and gigs. So let's play! Written in Standard Notation, TAB and includes fretboard diagrams. 76 pages.
