This 5 1/2" by 8" QWIKGUIDE was created for the bassist who has mastered the basics of slap bass and wants to expand his or her skills. Many of this book's examples were written to fine tune individual string control -- the ability to thumb or pop on any string at any time. Individual string control is one of the most common weaknesses with slap bass students. Some of this book's examples are common fingerstyle workouts that are arranged for slapping. Developing the ability to slap finger style bass lines gives the bassist an amazing skill. This book covers some very advanced slap techniques, including triple pops and the flamenco thumb technique. Written in tablature only for the four-string bass. Includes audio CD. 48 pages.

Welcome to the School of the Blues Lesson Series! This book and recording were created to help give you context to all the music you worked so hard to learn. The recorded Play-Along Trax have no bass. This gives you the opportunity to work on your blues bass patterns. I have used several different keys and tempos throughout these Play-Along Trax. These Play-Along Trax give you a very realistic example of how you would play live with a band.
Music examples are kept fairly simple to make sure this book is accessible to bass players just above the beginning level. For best understanding of these techniques refer to Mel Bay’s Blues Bass, Level 1 (MB21063BCD).
Lastly, all the references in this book are written for a right-handed four string electric bass. If you play a 5 string bass you just need to extend the examples to include your B string. If you play left-handed then you need to reverse any references to the left and right hands. Written in standard notation and TAB. 24 pages.

Saxophonist John Coltrane was one of the most innovative, creative, and influential jazz artists of the 20th Century. Both stylistically and harmonically, he opened doors for others to follow. This book will focus on the first period of Coltrane's career, when he was with Miles Davis, and the jazz vocabulary he used. First, to help the student better understand Coltrane's bebop style of improvising, the authors discuss the use of guide tones, bebop scales, three to flat nine, targeting, and other techniques. Then the text presents numerous one-, two-, and three-measure jazz lines in Coltrane's style grouped by the harmony over which they can be used. The accompanying play-along CD provides the rhythm parts for each section, including a track for each section that modulates through the cycle of fourths, helping you master the phrases in all keys. By combining various lines, musicians will be able to mix and match numerous combinations of these lines to play over ii-V-I progressions, turnarounds, and other harmonic situations. Incorporate these essential jazz lines into your vocabulary and you will be able to create your own lines in the style of John Coltrane. Written in standard notation only (no TAB).
