FROM DIXIE TO SWING

Such jazz legends as Dick Wellstood, Alphonse 'Doc' Cheatham and George Duvivier and more back you up in this amazing collection of New York-style Dixieland standards. After the break-up of the big-band era around 1950, many of the finest 'swing' or mainstream players found themselves without an outlet for their abilities and took to playing 'Dixieland' in New York clubs such as Eddie Condon's and the Metropole. And so was born a new style of Dixieland jazz minus the banjos, tubas, steamboats and magnolias! It is this version we celebrate on this album. We encourage you, the soloist, to invent counter-melodies rather than mere harmony parts. This is a music of loose weaving parts, not one of precision ensemble figures. And in short, it is one of the greatest improvisational experiences any jazz player could hope to have. MASTERING THE BASS

No reviews

Comprehensive study on the artistry of being a bassist.
To become a master requires a total devotion to learning that craft. A master is someone who has strong, consistent skills and executes them perfectly with only the effort required to do so. This mastery requires experience and practice. When the question is asked, 'how much should I practice?' the correct answer is, 'until you have mastered what you're working on.' This book is designed to give the student a thorough, gradual study of obtainable musical goals including a strong rhythmic foundation upon which bass playing must be built. That is the reason for the great number of short repeated grooves and vamps as well as a myriad of open string and first position studies. The intention is not to limit the player to the low positions but to insure the mastery of the bass register as well as all other registers of the instrument and introduce a wide range of musical examples. Some music requires an entire lifetime of practice. Being a Master does not mean that the Master need not practice anymore. One should always try to improve and learn new music. This is the example true Masters set for others to follow. When a musical example, (simple or difficult), is mastered by a student, there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. With each mastered piece comes more fulfillment. Good luck, work hard and have fun mastering the bass !

NEW ORLEANS CLASSICS

No reviews

Many people consider New Orleans the birthplace of jazz. After all Louis Armstrong was born and played there, as well as Joseph “King” Oliver, the Dodds Brothers, Sidney Bechet and a roster of players to fill not one but many all-star bands. Louis Prima was a ‘child of the Crescent City’ as is Harry Connick and Wynton Marsalis. The whole Marsalis clan was raised there, and are all acknowledged ‘jazz masters,’ so its reputation as the seminal jazz town has long been acknowledged.

We assembled a band of New Orleans’ best players for our times, veterans all of many street parades and steamboat gigs, and asked them to put together a typical program of New Orleans Classics. Under the direction of Tim Laughlin, clarinetist supreme, and led by Connie Jones, Jr., one of the great hornmen of this city which boasts so many great players…..they put together an album of must-hear, must-have songs that every traditional jazz player cherishes. Hear them now in these perfect renditions. Then join the band on your own instrument, be it clarinet, trumpet, trombone, tenor, piano, bass or drums as they swing through the French Quarter of New Orleans.
