This transcription is the bass line to Statesboro Blues by The Allman Brothers with the bass by the late, great Berry Oakley. The challenge here for Berry - and indeed for all his performances - is that the Allman Brothers sound is very full. There’s lots going on - and so Berry hasn’t got as much room to play as say someone like Jack Bruce who plays in a trio setting. That being said he does a great job of playing through the tune and throwing in some interesting variations. There’s also some nice patterns that you can take from this line to apply to other blues lines. If I were playing in some rock-blues style bands I’d definitely go through this and take some of the lines (and the approaches that go with the lines) and apply them to other keys. I really like Berry Oakley’s Bass playing - he doesn’t do anything particularly wild, but his playing is always supportive and always interesting. And he plays with great energy too. This transcription is Tiran Porter’s line to What A Fool Believes. This of course was from the period when Michael McDonald had joined the Doobie Brothers. His influence - both from a vocal standpoint and a songwriting standpoint - mellowed the band’s sound. And not for the better in my opinion. However What A Fool Believes is a great study in space and rhythm - the song has very distinct parts and distinct rhythms. There’s a lot of off beat rhythms here, so this will test your rhythmic precision. In terms of difficulty level this is not the hardest Tiran Porter line ever - but it’s a great study in using space in a line. If you listen to the original track there’s a lot of rhythm coming from other instruments - which gives Tiran the space to play more sparsely so that when he does play, his playing is really effective. If you’re a more advanced player this is a great sight reading study with just a metronome clicking. (and for extra credit - have the metronome click on beats 2 and 4). As you know, I’m an absolutely massive fan of James Jamerson. It’s also known that I believe he wrote the ‘bible’ of modern bass playing and that whatever style of music or genre you play in, this is a guy that you MUST study. This tune is a essentially a Jam - it was recorded live at one of the clubs in Detroit that the Funk Brothers used to play at as part of their regular, non-Motown gigs. You can find it either on an album called The Millenium Collection, or it’s also on The Standing In The Shadows double CD that accompanied the film of the same name. It’s basically a 12 bar blues in C with an intro tacked on, and an outro that is an extended vamp on the C7 chord. But there’s some really interesting - and impossible! - stuff going on. So it’s definitely worth studying. I’m going to use a couple of sections for the Motown Style Grooves project as there is some incredible playing going on. This transcription is the bass line to Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones. This is Keith Richards on bass - and not Bill Wyman. And it’s a very different style of bass line than Bill normally plays. This transcription is the bass line to Cloud 9 by The Temptations. What’s interesting about this tune is that it comes from the late 60s Motown period when the company and the songwriters were moving away from the ‘I’m in love, isn’t everything great’ kind of tune and they were being influenced by some of the more socially aware soul and funk bands out there. And Cloud 9 is definitely that kind of tune. The lyrics are quite dark - it’s obviously about taking drugs. The chords used in the song are much simpler than a lot of Motown tunes - and it allows us to see how Jamerson approaches playing on a one chord vamp, and some of the little variations he brings in to inject some lift to the tune.
