Essential Secrets 1: Practice Every Day
Practice Every Day
Daily review beats cramming once a week
Most musicians understand intuitively that practicing every day is the best way to improve. And, you've probably heard corny reminders like: "You don't have to practice every day -- just on the days you eat." Well, there's more to it than just cute sayings.
There are reasons that practicing every day offers better results than practicing occasionally does. First off, an obvious reason: practicing every day means you're putting in more time than if you practice only one or two times a week. The vast majority of bass players will actually see more total practice time by doing a very short practice session each day.
Second, you should learn the bass in the way that people best learn anything -- in small increments. The human brain cannot absorb huge amounts of information at once. Sure, you can cram a lot of material into your brain (like the night before a final exam), but that information will quicky disappear. It's important to digest small amounts of information if you want the knowledge to stick. When you practice daily, you don't have to take in as much musical information at each practice session. And you'll be more successful.
A third and crucial difference between practicing every day and practicing occasionally is the positive effect daily practicing has on your long-term memory. Your brain will only move information from short-term memory to long-term memory if that information seems very important. Everything else gets washed away, and you forget it. When you practice your bass every day, your brain is constantly receiving musical information. And this repetition helps you get that music into your long-term memory.
Practicing bass every day gives you more total practice time, makes learning more efficient, and increases your ability to remember what you're playing. Commit yourself to practicing every day. Short practice sessions every day are simply better than one long practice per week. Ten minutes a day really works!
