Essential Secrets 59: Make Your Goals Attainable
Make Your Goals Attainable
How to Stay Motivated and Confident
One fundamental secret to success is having goals. Without goals, bassists spend a great deal of time practicing getting very little done. Your practice plan needs to include important goals.
But, planning alone is not enough. Forward momentum is only sustained if you actually meet your goals. This seems silly to say, but if you want to attain your goals, they must be attainable!
When goals are within reach, several good things happen: You’ll feel a wave of confidence each time you reach a goal, which will prompt you to set up and attain your next goal. As you continually attain your goals, you’ll want to practice as often as possible to receive the positive reinforcement that feeds your self-esteem and keeps you motivated. Let’s face it: achieving goals is fun.
Unattainable goals create a very different process: First, feelings of frustration appear—in the practice room, at rehearsals, and during performances. Then, if the frustration becomes more frequent, bassists start questioning why they’re even bothering to try. They practice less and don’t feel like playing. Finally, they give up and quit playing bass altogether. Do not let this happen to you.
How do you make your goals attainable? What if your goal is to perform at Carnegie Hall or to sell one-million downloads of your latest song? To make such large-scale goals attainable, you’ll need two strategies:
1. Give yourself a long-term target date. For instance, your debut at Carnegie Hall could happen ten years from now. That is definitely attainable no matter what your current level of proficiency.
2. Create intermediate goals that support your long-term goal. Before you can convince people to pay for your song online, make sure you’ve got a following for your blog, viewers for your online videos, and a growing social network.
Achieving your goals will make practicing bass a lot more satisfying. Always create short-term, attainable goals that are constantly moving you toward your long-term dreams.
