Secret 65:
Notice What You Do Well

--

Don't Waste Time Worrying

--

Do you recognize your accomplishments and feel good about them? Or, do you focus only on your musical problems?

It’s important to know which aspects of your playing need improvement. After all, every bassist wants to be better. But, it’s equally important to notice progress you’ve made.

Don’t become one of those bassists who plays an amazing concert but leaves the stage feeling down. Thousands of notes played perfectly, yet they focus all their thoughts and energies on the two notes they missed. That is not healthy. And, it’s not a good use of your time.

A balanced approach is better. Remember that music (like life itself) always has room for improvement but needs to be enjoyed today. These three practice room techniques will help you achieve this balance:

· When you’ve first learned something, don’t immediately get frustrated and say, “I can’t play this up to speed.” Of course you can’t! You just learned it! Instead, praise yourself for learning all those notes. You don’t have time to be frustrated.

· When you record yourself and listen back, list three things that went well before you focus on what can be better. This balance will silence your inner critic, make you more objective, and motivate you to make the needed fixes immediately.

· Use positive, direct language as you plan improvements for a phrase or section. It’s better to say, “Get that shift to the fourth finger” than something vague and untrue, like “Remembering fingerings is impossible.” Fixing a single shift can happen quickly; worrying about hand positions in general will make you unfocused and will waste a lot of time.

Bassists aim for perfection. But, you need to realize that being perfect is not humanly possible. Since there will always be room for improvement in your bass playing, be sure to notice everything you’re already doing well. This will make your pursuit of perfection a happier journey.

Musicians are not good social distancers. Performers, teachers, students, garage jammers, fans of live music -- getting together is what we do.

But we have to be careful for a while yet, and not gather in crowds. BassBooks.com is operating as normally as possible, to keep you in books and music. Our suppliers' warehouse and shipping facilities could be impacted, as could deliveries by the US Postal Service and UPS. Of course, our EBOOK downloads will always be available, quickly and contact-free!

Stay healthy.
