Secret 69:
Play Music You Like

--

Making Practicing Inspirational and Fun

--

This secret sounds crazy. Of course you’ll play music you like! Otherwise, what’s the point of playing bass at all?

Well, to master the bass guitar, you’ll need to do some drills and scales. These exercises could be tedious. Additionally, you’ll need to learn some challenging music to develop specific technical skills. There is no promise that you are going to enjoy playing this music, but you will definitely become a better bassist by learning it.

Just as important though, you’ve got to play music you truly like and sincerely want to learn. These songs are the reason you were drawn to play bass in the first place. Being inspired by the music you are mastering is the ultimate motivational tool for practicing. If you’re inspired, you’ll make time to practice every day—no matter how busy you are.

Music you love puts the focus back on the “play” in playing your instrument. You’ll enjoy every minute in the practice room, and time will fly by. You’ll absorb the music quickly and learn faster than you ever imagined you could. Getting every detail of the music just right will be a pleasure instead of a chore. And, the whole time you’ll be having fun.

This practice tip comes with a warning if you’re taking lessons:

Insisting on playing music you like may cause friction between you and your bass teacher. Sometimes the music that is inspirational to students isn’t the music your teacher thinks you should learn. That’s okay. If your bass teacher won’t help you with your favorite music, you can practice it anyway. To make both you and your teacher happy, practice the required music for your lesson first. Then, play the music that inspires you as your reward. You can do a few minutes of each, every day.
