NEW BOOKS: GIANTS OF BASS

GIANTS OF BASS VOLUME 1
GIANTS OF BASS
VOLUME 1: 60s and 70s

Here's a brilliant new set from Stuart Clayton, revising and greatly expanding his previous book, GIANTS OF BASS. Now in two volumes organized by decades, you get in-depth analyses of the finest and most influential bass players of the times.

For each of these remarkable artists, Stuart presents a thoroughly researched biography, selected discography, gear analysis and a detailed breakdown of their commonly used playing techniques.

As a special bonus, for each player, Stuart provides an original, full-length piece of music written expressly to showcase their characteristic style.

Volume 1 features James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Duck Dunn, Rocco Prestia, Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Paul McCartney, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins, and Bernard Edwards.

GIANTS OF BASS VOLUME 2
GIANTS OF BASS
VOLUME 2: 80s and 90s

The second volume of GIANTS OF BASS offers the same detailed approach, and focusses on the great players of the 1980s and 1990s.

The featured bassists are Cliff Burton, Sting, Billy Sheehan, Mark King, Flea, Marcus Miller, John Myung, Pino Palladino, Stuart Hamm, Stuart Zender, Tim Commerford, Victor Wooten, and Michael Manring.

Audio tracks for the included songs (both full-band and bass-free backing tracks) are available as free downloads from the publisher's website.

Don't miss these great tributes to the artists who helped make playing the bass what it is today. Understanding what they did will make you better at what you do.

HAPPENINGS
Here's what has caught our attention lately.

VICTOR WOOTEN "Although many musicians agree music is a language, it is rarely treated as such."

In a deeply impressive TED ED video five-time GRAMMY® winner Victor Wooten uses his own astonishing bass playing to highlight his view that music should be learned the same way a child absorbs language: by using it, every day, in close contact with "experts," and making lots of mistakes.

"Learning to speak was not something you were sent somewhere to do only a few times a week."

ESSENTIAL SECRETS
Here's the latest in a series of free tips from performance coach/bassist David Motto and his ebook, THE 10-MINUTE BASS VIRTUOSO: An Insider's Guide to Transforming Your Bass Playing in Ten Minutes a Day.

THE TEN MINUTE BASS VIRTUOSO
SECRET 31:
TACKLE THE TOUGH STUFF

Mastering Difficult Material

In every piece of music, there is inevitably one section that seems unplayable. It’s either
too high or too fast, or it just seems too hard. Sometimes there are many of these sections.
Throughout this book, this difficult material will be called “Tough Stuff.”

The Tough Stuff is important because it reminds you of the main purpose of practicing
the bass: learning material you cannot play right now so you can master it and perform it
successfully later. As much as you might want to go over everything you already do well in
the limited amount of time you have for practicing, you need to build new skills.

Bass Transcription of
a Lesson from Alain Caron

This transcription is compliments of Eric Beaulé, at www.PlayBassLines.com, author of several titles we carry.

Alain Caron gave a Master Class at Ultimate Bass Camp 2017, and here Eric presents a series of practice exercises Alain recommends. He said, "Learn the scales, the triads, chord tones and arpeggios and practice them inside and out. In all 12 keys. Over two octaves. Then from the lowest to the highest note on your bass neck. Be able to play them in your sleep."
