ESSENTIAL SECRETS
Here's the latest in a series of free tips from performance coach/bassist David Motto and his ebook, THE 10-MINUTE BASS VIRTUOSO: An Insider's Guide to Transforming Your Bass Playing in Ten Minutes a Day.

THE TEN MINUTE BASS VIRTUOSO
SECRET 81:
DEFINE SUCCESS

Knowing What Matters to You

Everyone knows what success is. Success is when you succeed! However, only you can define what success means for you. Feelings of success are highly personal, and you should develop your own definition of success so you know when you achieve it.

In general, there are two ways to choose your definition of musical success:

1. Using external cues like a reviewer’s opinion about your performance or the amount you were paid for a gig.

2. Focusing on internal benchmarks that other people may not even recognize, such as mastering a particular piece of music or developing a new technique that lets you be more expressive.

The external signs of success are public and easier to see, but the internal have more meaning. The main difference between these two is who decides when you’re successful.

SECRET 82:
RECORD YOURSELF

The Power of Objective Listening

As a practicing musician you are expected to do the impossible. While playing, you are supposed to listen carefully to identify everything that needs improvement.

Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult to play bass and listen to yourself at the same time. Trying to critique your sound as you create it is distracting and lessens your ability to play your best in the first place!

What’s more, musicians are often inaccurate when they assess their own playing. You might think that a run-through went well because it felt good to play, regardless of the actual sound produced. Similarly, performers who struggle through a few sections often report that the run-through went badly—even if they played beautifully. These subjective judgments give you an unclear picture of the true quality of your bass playing.

If you want to save enormous amounts of time in the practice room, don’t evaluate yourself as you play. Instead, record a run-through. Do not judge or criticize your performance as you create it.
