Comping Styles for Bass Volume 2 Funk is a collection of 36 different progressions that are presented in a funk style. The chord progressions include 12 versions of a blues, minor blues and rhythm changes in all 12 keys. This allows a bass player to see multiple options for playing through these common chord progressions with a variety of funk bass lines.
Both the guitar and bass parts are presented in staff notation (no TAB) so a bass player can see what the guitar is doing and also get experience reading bass parts on a professional level in a funk style. The included MP3s contain all progressions in a trio setting of guitar, bass and drums.
Comping Styles is a series of books based on the chord progressions found in Chord Workbook for Guitar Volume One. Each Comping Styles volume covers a particular style of playing.
Volume Two covers the sixteenth note bass grooves common to funk. This volume is an excellent guide for learning how to play and read in a funk style. The companion MP3 files are included which provides you with a guitar, bass and drums versions of each exercise.
Unlike traditional situations where the reader is left on their own after purchase of a text, Muse-Eek Publishing seeks to keep the reader/student engaged. With each book you are beginning a relationship in which help and direction are always available to make sure you are learning correctly. This book is a required textbook at New York University and Princeton University and is recommended for intermediate to advanced students ages 13 and up.
The ability to read, play and make a convincing, consistent groove in a sixteenth note rhythm is one of the more formidable challenges facing a contemporary rhythm-section player. This book attempts to address that challenge by supplying chord progressions with different syncopated rhythmic patterns. Practice of these exercises will lead to an understanding of the style, and ability to execute the rhythms common to funk. The student should strive to maintain rhythmic precision throughout each exercise, and after gaining control should compose their own comping patterns. The examples contained in this book use mostly a one-measure funk pattern but in the "real world" it is more common to find 2- or 4-measure patterns. In a attempt to keep this book simpler I have used shorter but less common patterns which can be found in funk music.
