PREFACE FROM THE TITLE
This book consists of over 140 basic rhythmic patterns, chord progressions, walking jazz patterns, jazz-rock patterns, and etudes, designed to prepare the student and professional player to cope with the demands of contemporary performance of music conceived in meters and rhythms other than the basic 2, 3 and 4©beat measures. Accordingly, these exercises and studies have been written in such more-or-less unusual rhythmic patterns as 3/4 (Jazz Waltz), 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8, embracing a wide variety of contemporary styles based on the work of the most successful performers and composers of the present day.

Part I presents 11 basic chord progressions in all major and minor keys, as used in walking jazz patterns in both 3/4 and 4/4, as well as two Etudes, all designed as a foundation for the odd meter studies to flow.

,Part II consists of 50 basic jazz-rock rhythm patterns and variations, in different keys, in 3/4 (JazzWaltz), 3/4 (Jazz Waltz), 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 6/8, 7/8, 9/8 and 12/8 meter, all adapted from contemporary practice.

Part III includes 8 specially written Etudes in various time signatures, including 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 6/8, and 12/8 affording the student an opportunity of seeing how these unusual meters are utilized in full-length, extended works.

,Part IV encourages the student to create and write out his own original bass lines based on givenchord progressions in 10 exercises in the same meters as the Etudes in Part III.

The following suggestions will aid both teacher and student in obtaining maximum benefits from the use of this book:
1. Each exercise and etude should be played at varying speeds, but never at a faster pace than will permit the individual tones making up each line to sound clearly and cleanly at all times. The student should play each exercise or etude in a rather slow tempo at first, and then gradually increase the speed each time he repeats it. Choice of exact tempi and metronomic indications is left to teacher and student, both of whom will be guided by the student's gradually developing abilities.

2. As in the preceding volumes of this series. BASIC ELECTRIC BASS Vol. III - Basic Rock Patterns and Studies, and BASIC ELECTRIC BASS Vol. IV - Basic Jazz Patterns and Studies, each of the exercises in this book should be played at least twice in succession (preferably more) without interrupting the rhythmic flow. In this way the student will gradually develop a feeling for the pattern as a whole, especially with the repetition or imitation of it, in exactly the same way he will be using it in actual musical performance.

,.3. The student should not attempt to skip through this book, but should take each and every exercise in turn. In doing so, he will be building up not only his reading and technical skills, but also a repertoire of styles and patterns that will be of great help to him in free improvisation later on.Occasional fingerings and position indications have been added throughout this book as a general guide. The student should bear in mind that many of these figures may be played with the same fingering in various keys, and also that some figures may be played with the same fingering by using another position on an adjacent string. For a full discussion and explanation of modern fingering principles and organization of the fingerboard of the Electric Bass, both students and teachers are cordially referred to Volumes I and II of this series. BASIC ELECTRIC BASS Vol. I - Standard Fingerings and Positions, and BASIC ELECTRIC BASS Vol. II - Basic Repertoire, respectively.
