The Bass EncycloMedia presents its material in four parts; Chord - Scale - Arpeggio - Song. 42 songs are also included in the Bass EncycloMedia, and every song has been analyzed to show each chord's corresponding tonal center scale and mode, providing you with many opportunities to apply the chords, scales and arpeggios that you have learned. In addition, numerous substitutional ideas are presented, which suggest many variations.

Throughout the Bass EncycloMedia are 'see page' links which refer you to important information related to the page you are on.

PREFACE
Congratulations!
Your desire to learn, willingness to practice and ability to perform has led you to the Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia - as essential as your instrument.

New thoughts and ideas about 12 sounds, 21 symbols, and 15 major and minor keys need new names and labels. Therefore, I combined Guitar, Bass, Encyclo and Media in order to convey, 'a quality communication of mind, using symbols recognized by the brain, and played on your guitar'. This encyclomedic way of thinking, enables you to begin with a 'whole and connected' view of the fretboard, so that you may easily start to see and play the many thousands of chord, scale and arpeggio 'fragments'.

The Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia - which have both evolved over four decades of fretboard study - continues to be the most comprehensive presentation of musical thought as it is applied to the guitar and bass fretboard. Its continued development has been brought about by the unending questions of students, who in effect, have taught me what they need to know! And guess what? It's been 6 years since the Guitar EncycloMedia was first published in 1996 (the Bass EncycloMedia in 2003), and the questions have not ended. In fact, it's the reason for the revised second edition of the Guitar EncycloMedia, which reflects those unending thoughts and ideas, and brings both the GEM and the BEM into the 21st Century. Thank you one and all!

Hundreds of pages have been revised, and there are many changes throughout the 2nd edition GEM. However, three very important differences from the 1st edition GEM stand out: 1. All chord grids show horizontal strings and vertical frets, 'a players point of view', 2. All chord grids (except page 2) show tone patterns (scale degrees) instead of finger patterns, and 3. Form circle-six three replaces form circle-six four. Circle-six three is a 'whole' chord form, whereas circle-six four is but a 'fragment' of circle-six three. Of course all these enhancements have been incorporated into the 1st edition BEM

The FastTable (table of contents) makes locating any chord, scale, arpeggio, song or important idea - fast and easy - and an additional Index makes their location even faster and easier.

There are 42 songs in both the Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia, and they are presented in a progressive order from simple to complex. They are also arranged alphabetically for quick location. And now with GEM Jam you can play-along with Guitar EncycloMedia!

Congratulations once again, you are taking a very important step in your development as a musician playing the guitar or bass!

FOREWORD
I have written both the Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia to answer the question:
What do I play the second time through a song?

There are many individual books that show chords, scales and arpeggios and other books that teach you how to read staff notation or tab, so that you may play a song through the first time. However, these books do not explain what to play when only a chord symbol is given.

The Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia thoroughly explains in one volume, how chords, scales and arpeggios combine with one another, enabling you to play something uniquely different the second time through a song.

The Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia is not a faddish 'flash in the pan' or some novelty approach illustrating the latest 'hot licks' - but rather the most complete reference of guitar knowledge available, containing all chords, scales and arpeggios necessary to perform any song in any style.

The Guitar and Bass EncycloMedia will always be timely.
