INTRODUCTION
I find playing bass to be one of the most enjoyable things in the world. It doesn't matter to me if I am playing to 10,000 people or playing by myself. I really love to play the bass. I play about every style of music imaginable. I always encourage students to study all types of music. You can learn so much doing this.

Most of the world's greatest bassists are popular because they are different. What makes them so different? They are often mixing in some kind of unique musical influence with what they play. It may be a funk influence mixed with their rock playing. It may be a reggae influence mixed with their jazz playing. Studying many different styles can directly influence your style. This book was created to give students a sample of a large mix of bass styles.

,Studying patterns is a great way to get started on bass. Playing most basic patterns is usually not that difficult. Playing a pattern in a chord progression takes a bit more skill. Now you are dealing with moving patterns. Playing with a band takes the most skill. You have to focus on time, feel, and groove, as well playing a pattern in a progression. This book focuses on patterns, progressions, and playing with a band. The accompanying CD has all this books examples recorded with a full band. All the examples are included with and without bass. This way you can hear what an example is supposed to sound like and jam along with a professional band. The examples with bass play the progression twice. The first time is played as written. The second time uses basic pattern variations. These variations are not written in the book. Listen to them and then try to improvise your own pattern variations. Have fun!
