BASS PLAYERS GET SOME LOVE FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

"The thing about the bass is it's the first thing that you hear when you're approaching a stage."

At the 2017 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, LA Times writer Randall Roberts chose to give some props to often-overlooked bass players.

The broad variety of musical acts and the wide-open-air, multi-stage nature of the event made for some impressive bass performances. Roberts reported, "While the musical peacocks conveyed oh-so-deep imagery with their co-conspirators hogging the limelight on the front line, the roughneck bassists and their compatriots on the drums ran the rhythmic engines below, their calloused fingers guiding the direction."

See Randall Roberts' LA Times piece here.

ESSENTIAL SECRETS

Performance coach/bassist David Motto offers free tips from his ebook, THE TEN-MINUTE BASS VIRTUOSO.

SECRET 23:
DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Understanding the Context of the Music

It’s important to understand the correct way to play the notes you’re learning. Of course the term “correct” is open to debate, but there are accepted ways of playing certain styles of music. Grasping the style of the music is not as simple as placing it in a broad category such as classical, jazz, or rock. There’s more to it than that.

In the world of classical music, there are stylistic differences between pieces from the Baroque era versus those from the Romantic era. Jazz players use different phrasing for New Orleans and Bebop tunes. In pop music, bassists would never use the same tone playing 1960’s Motown as they would when playing 1990’s funk metal.

This means you’ll need to do your homework if you want to understand what to do with all those notes you’re diligently practicing. Learn something about the composer, the era when the music was written, and the historical context of the music. This knowledge is interesting and fun, and can help you decide exactly how to perform your song.

Doing your homework also means knowing the ways the song has been performed in the past. Listen to recordings of master bassists playing the music you’re learning, and pay attention to their tone, tempo, articulations, and phrasing.

SECRET 24:
EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY

Using the Tools that Accelerate Learning

Learning to play the bass is typically an old-fashioned activity. You spend hours perfecting your craft. There is a master/apprentice system in private lessons, with most instruction being done just as it has been for generations.

Though many bass players practice in a traditional way, you should take advantage of all the current tools that substantially increase your learning speed. These devices offer you time-savings, increased physical comfort, and greater enjoyment. Some of the innovative technologies available today include:

· Accompaniment Software: Improves your knowledge of the music you’re learning and makes practicing more fun.

· Adjustable Playback Systems: CD players and software are available that will slow down a recording while keeping the pitch constant.

· Ergonomic Equipment: There are chairs designed to help your posture, extremely lightweight cases that are easy to carry, padded shoulder straps that increase comfort, and even new instrument designs that increase playability.

· Online Resources: Videos, ear-training, music theory, online metronomes, downloadable sheet music, bass tutorials, recordings, lessons, and much more are all waiting for you online.

· Digital Recorders and Camcorders: Seeing is believing. Get instant visual and aural feedback that will help you improve your technique, phrasing, posture, and onstage demeanor.
